| Backstory: | Markum Nez Toron was born into the royal Nez Toron bloodline of the Sariyaz Kingdom alongside his twin brother, Josquin. Though Josquin possessed stronger political instincts, Markum excelled in military strategy, swordsmanship, and Flame Source combat. Over decades of service, he became one of Sariyaz’s most respected commanders, known for discipline, tactical brilliance, and leading from the front rather than from court chambers. As instability spread across the kingdom, influential nobles and military factions began supporting Markum as a stronger candidate for the throne. Though initially resistant, years of political pressure and worsening conditions within Sariyaz eventually drew him into a succession conflict against Josquin. The civil war that followed devastated the kingdom. Noble houses fractured, armies divided, and Source users turned battlefields into massacres. Though Markum commanded tremendous military loyalty, he ultimately lost the conflict. The war left him deeply disillusioned with nobility, political ambition, and magic users, whom he came to view as the root of the kingdom’s corruption and decline — including himself. After the war, Markum renounced all political claims and entered self-imposed exile on the frontier bordering the Unclaimed Lands. He settled alone in a ruined fortress alone, spending the next twenty-five years patrolling the wilderness, maintaining the fort, and avoiding the affairs of civilization. |
