| Backstory: | Lilia Hazelthorn was born in Ansell-Vend and raised as the only child of a merchant family. The Hazelthorns were not a military family. For generations, they had been involved in commerce, and Lilia’s parents eventually established and operated a general store in the Foreigners Borough of Regel-Sete, the capital of Ansell-Vend. Their store served both Vends and foreigners living within the city, exposing Lilia from an early age to people from different cultures, backgrounds, and walks of life. As a child, Lilia demonstrated an unusual aptitude for magic. Her instructors discovered that she possessed a rare affinity for Barrier Magic, a specialized form of magic capable of creating defensive barriers and protecting others from physical and magical threats. Recognizing that her talent was far beyond what could be taught locally, her parents made a significant financial sacrifice to provide her with the best education available. They saved enough money to send Lilia to the Mages Campus of the Three Towers in Tharmatur, the nation of mages. There, she devoted herself to the study of magic and eventually came under the instruction of the Archmage of the Tower of Runes. Under the Archmage’s guidance, Lilia refined her natural affinity and developed the discipline required to use Barrier Magic effectively. Her studies also introduced her to the broader magical sciences, including the principles behind magical barriers, runic inscriptions, and defensive spellcraft. After completing her studies in Tharmatur, Lilia returned to Ansell-Vend to reunite with her parents. Rather than immediately seeking a position within the military, she spent several years working at the family general store in Regel-Sete. She enjoyed returning to her family and initially had little ambition beyond helping her parents maintain the business. That changed when the store was attacked by human thieves. The robbery quickly turned violent. Lilia intervened, using her Barrier Magic to protect her parents and prevent the thieves from escaping with their lives and their loot. Her ability to create and maintain barriers under pressure caught the attention of the authorities. Among those who took notice was Alderond, Commander of the Queen’s Guard. Alderond recognized that Lilia possessed more than unusual magical talent. She had demonstrated composure under pressure, a willingness to protect others, and the discipline necessary to use defensive magic in a dangerous situation. He recruited her into the Ansell-Vend Military, where she became a Mage Officer. Lilia proved to be exceptionally well suited to military service. Her Barrier Affinity made her valuable as a defensive specialist, capable of protecting soldiers and strategic positions. Her training in Tharmatur also gave her a level of magical knowledge uncommon among ordinary military personnel. Over time, Lilia was assigned additional responsibilities as an inquisitor for the military. Her ability to remain composed, methodical, and observant made her particularly effective at conducting interviews and gathering intelligence. She approaches questioning as a disciplined investigation rather than an emotional confrontation, carefully recording statements and looking for contradictions. Lilia is strict, organized, intelligent, and fiercely loyal to her post. She is known among the military as a stickler for the rules and expects the same discipline from those around her.
