| Backstory: | Valoryth Gloomstar was the firstborn son of King Primoryn Gloomstar. His younger siblings were Androlyth, his middle-born brother, and Amalyth, his youngest sister. From an early age, Valoryth demonstrated exceptional talent as both a warrior and a mage. He possessed a powerful Wind Affinity, supported by a constitution containing an unusually large amount of magical source. Valoryth eventually served alongside his father in military campaigns to retake southern Ansell-Vend from barbarian forces. Fighting alongside his closest friend, Alderond, Valoryth helped defeat the Barbarian King and establish a strong, stable border in the south. After his military service, Valoryth traveled throughout Tarmynia as an ambassador to human nations. His experiences during these travels profoundly influenced his worldview. He was particularly impressed by Geldanos, the youngest of the human nations. Despite having existed for only roughly 500 years, Geldanos had developed into a stable nation with a powerful military. He was also fascinated by the magical advancement of Tharmatur, particularly its magical engineering, which demonstrated possibilities that exceeded his expectations. These experiences led Valoryth to question the complacency of Vend society. The Vend possessed extraordinarily long lifespans, but Valoryth believed that this longevity could become a weakness. Humans, having much shorter lives, were compelled to develop, adapt, and advance rapidly. The Vend, by comparison, had centuries to accomplish the same things. Valoryth came to believe that Vend complacency would eventually leave them behind. After King Primoryn relinquished the throne, Valoryth was crowned King of Ansell-Vend. During his reign, he met Ilriath Willowmere, a woman from a noble house. The two fell in love and married. They had one daughter, Seralyth, whom Valoryth cherished deeply. As king, Valoryth enacted his open-border policy. His purpose was to increase Vend interaction with other races and expose his people to the advancement occurring throughout Tarmynia. He hoped that greater interaction would plant an awareness among the Vend that their civilization needed to continue advancing. The policy, however, became a double-edged sword. Opening Ansell-Vend brought opportunities for growth and exposure to new ideas, but it also introduced risks that had previously been kept outside the kingdom. During his kingship, Valoryth himself developed a rare Vend disease in which the magical source attacks the body. As the disease progressed and his death approached, Valoryth entrusted his oldest and most trusted friend, Alderond, with one final request: Watch over Ilriath and Seralyth. Valoryth ultimately passed away peacefully at approximately 450 years of age, in Ilriath’s arms. His death left behind a kingdom wrestling with the consequences of his open-border policy, a daughter who had lost the father she deeply loved, a wife who inherited his throne, and a lifelong friend bound by one final promise. Valoryth Gloomstar—the Scion of Enduring Wind—was gone, but his vision for Ansell-Vend endured. |
