| Backstory: | Maloryn Argentis was born into the Argentis family, one of the oldest noble houses of Ansell-Vend. The Argentis house bears the sigil of the Golden Tree of Knowledge, a symbol representing the family’s traditional role as keepers and preservers of Vend knowledge. For generations, the Argentis have maintained extensive records of Vend history, law, customs, and traditions. Maloryn eventually entered government service, where his knowledge of Venden law and history established him as an effective statesman. Over the course of his long life, he served two generations of Gloomstar kings: Primoryn Gloomstar and his son, Valoryth Gloomstar. Following Valoryth’s death, Maloryn continued his service under Queen Ilriath Gloomstar, becoming the First Minister of the Grand Order. The Grand Order is a council composed of the oldest noble houses of Ansell-Vend. As First Minister, Maloryn represents the interests of the traditionalist faction within Vend society and has considerable influence over matters of law, governance, and cultural policy. Maloryn believes the ancient ways of the Vend are more than customs. To him, they are the foundation of Vend civilization and the means by which the Vend maintain their connection to nature. He views rapid cultural change with deep suspicion, particularly when that change originates outside Vend society. For this reason, Maloryn strongly opposed King Valoryth’s open-border policy. He believes that prolonged interaction between the Vend and other races inevitably introduces foreign customs and vices into Vend society. He particularly fears the spread of gambling, substance abuse, and what he considers sexual deviance. In his view, these are not merely individual moral failures but symptoms of a larger cultural erosion. Maloryn’s opposition to Valoryth’s policy placed him firmly among its critics during the king’s reign. Even after Valoryth’s death, Maloryn remains determined to preserve what he believes is being lost. He is not opposed to change merely because it is unfamiliar. He believes change itself can become a threat to the survival of the Vend. As First Minister, Maloryn will use every political, legal, and social means available to him to preserve the old ways. And he is willing to go further than most would expect to accomplish that goal. |
