| Backstory: | Gorbluth — The Golden ScalesGorbluth was born into the Golden Scales Company, a Grun’Dorian family business whose roots stretched back generations. His ancestors had begun as simple appraisers, learning to judge the quality, authenticity, and worth of goods brought through the growing markets of Grun’Dor. Over time, the family became one of the most prosperous merchant houses in the confederation. From childhood, Gorbluth was taught that wealth was not the measure of a person. He was taught the three principles of the Golden Scales:**Do not treat people as a means to an end.****Treat others as you would wish to be treated.****Do not be nice. Be fair. Give people what they deserve.**To Gorbluth, these were not merely words repeated by his parents. They were the foundation of a successful life. His natural affinity for Detection Magic emerged early. When Gorbluth examined an object, he could sense its composition, craftsmanship, and hidden properties. As he grew older, his ability developed further. Occasionally, when touching an old or significant item, fragments of its history would appear in his mind—brief images of places, people, and events long past. His family taught him that this gift was not a license to exploit people. An appraisal was a responsibility. A merchant who knowingly cheated someone could become rich. A merchant who earned the trust of an entire community could become powerful. Gorbluth chose the latter. By adulthood, he had transformed his family’s traditional appraisal business into something considerably larger. He traveled throughout Grun’Dor, negotiated trade agreements, evaluated rare artifacts and commodities, and built relationships with merchants, craftsmen, farmers, nobles, and foreign traders alike. He became known for two things. He could recognize the value of almost anything. And he could rarely be bought. Gorbluth accumulated considerable wealth, eventually becoming one of the most successful merchants in Grun’Dor. Yet he continued to live simply, dress practically, and treat laborers and kings with the same measured courtesy. He had no interest in displaying what he owned. His satisfaction came from what he had become. Like other Grun’Dorian goblins, Gorbluth understood that his life was short. He therefore had no intention of wasting it merely accumulating gold. He wanted to understand the world. He wanted to leave it better than he found it. And, above all, he wanted to become the person his time in the world allowed him to become. That was the true inheritance his family had given him. Not the Golden Scales Company.Not its wealth.**Its philosophy.** |
