Wednesday, May 13th started with clear skies over Chicago, though the spring air still carried a chill that would settle in harder after sunset. I met up with my friend Ramon Charriez for what became a memorable pre-birthday adventure ride through the city. With Ramon\u2019s birthday only a day away, I figured there was no better way to celebrate than with a long urban ride packed with scenery, stories, and photo stops.<\/p>\n\n\n

Logan Square Eagle Monument<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

We rolled out from Roosevelt High School and headed south toward Logan Square. The streets were lively but calm enough for a comfortable ride, and the evening light gave the neighborhoods that classic Chicago glow. Our first major stop was the Logan Square Eagle Monument, the historic Illinois Centennial Monument that has stood in the square since 1918. The tall column topped with its bronze eagle has long been a symbol of the neighborhood and one of the Northwest Side\u2019s most recognizable landmarks. We stopped there for photos before continuing our ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Logan Square we cruised down Milwaukee Avenue, weaving through the steady movement of cyclists, traffic, and pedestrians. Milwaukee always feels like one of the city\u2019s great cycling arteries \u2014 busy, energetic, and full of life. The ride eventually carried us into the Fulton Market district, where old brick warehouses now stand beside restaurants, bars, and modern glass buildings. The contrast between Chicago\u2019s industrial past and modern skyline was impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At one point Ramon had to make a call on his cell phone that lasted a bit longer than expected, giving us a chance to slow down and take in the city atmosphere around us before continuing east.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We pushed onward down Jackson Boulevard toward the river. Downtown Chicago at night always feels cinematic \u2014 lights reflecting off the water, trains rattling overhead, and traffic flowing between the skyscrapers. We stopped several times for pictures along the riverwalk area before heading deeper into the Loop.<\/p>\n\n\n

Sears (Willis) Tower.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

One of our next photo stops was the legendary Willis Tower, still one of the tallest and most iconic skyscrapers in the United States. Originally completed in 1973 as the Sears Tower, the building remains a defining feature of the Chicago skyline and a reminder of the city\u2019s architectural ambition. Looking up from street level on a bike always makes the tower feel even more massive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there we rode over to the historic Chicago Board of Trade Building. The towering Art Deco structure, crowned by its famous statue of Ceres, has represented Chicago\u2019s role in global commerce for nearly a century. At night, the building\u2019s illuminated crown stood out beautifully against the dark sky, making it another perfect stop for photos.<\/p>\n\n\n

Flamingo Calder Sculpture.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Not far away, we visited the bright red Flamingo sculpture near the federal plaza and post office. Designed by Alexander Calder and installed in 1974, the enormous steel sculpture remains one of Chicago\u2019s most recognizable public artworks. The curves and shadows of the sculpture looked especially dramatic under the city lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afterward we headed toward Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park. One of the largest fountains in the world, Buckingham Fountain has been a centerpiece of Chicago\u2019s lakefront since 1927. The fountain\u2019s nighttime lighting and steady spray created one of the best views of the evening, especially with the skyline glowing behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there we picked up the Lakefront Trail and rode north along Lake Shore Drive. The trail is one of the crown jewels of cycling in Chicago \u2014 miles of uninterrupted riding along Lake Michigan with skyline views on one side and open water on the other. Even with the cooler night air coming off the lake, the ride felt peaceful and freeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At some point along the trail we stopped to enjoy a couple beers while taking in the city lights and the sound of the waves rolling against the shoreline. It was one of those simple moments that makes bicycle adventures memorable \u2014 good company, cool air, and a city that never really seems to sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually we turned back and cycled home, tired but satisfied after covering so much of the city in a single evening. It was a great adventure ride with Ramon and the perfect way to celebrate the eve of his birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
